Rick Zinbarg

Richard E. Zinbarg, Ph.D. received his PhD from Northwestern University in 1989 and is Professor in the Psychology Department of Northwestern University.  He has previously served as Director of Clinical Training and served two terms as Chair of the Psychology Department (2017-2020 & 2020-2023).  He served as the project director for the DSM-IV Mixed Anxiety Depression field trial, a member of the DSM-IV Text Revision Mixed Anxiety Depression Subcommittee, an advisor to the DSM-V Task Force and as a member of the American Psychological Association’s Commission on Accreditation. He was an Associate Editor for the British Journal of Clinical Psychology and also for the Journal of Abnormal Psychology.  He is also the Founder and Chief Scientist of the Anxiety and Panic Treatment Program of The Family Institute at Northwestern University. 

 He has published almost 200 peer-reviewed articles and chapters in the areas of anxiety disorders, clinical research methodology and measurement theory. His research interests focus on understanding the structure of anxiety and depression, risk factors for the development of anxiety and depressive disorders, clinical research methodology, developing more effective treatments and preventive interventions for the anxiety disorders and basic measurement theory and techniques.  He is highly cited and has given many invited talks both nationally and internationally.  For the past 20 years he has been conducting NIMH-funded research on risk for the development of anxiety and depressive disorders in adolescents and is currently a Principal investigator on a NIMH-funded trial to prevent anxiety and depressive disorders in adolescents.
