David Uttal

David Uttal is the Kenneth F. Burgess Professor of Education and PsychologyHe conducts research and teaches both the School of Education and Social Policy and in the Department of Psychology in the Weinberg College of Arts and SciencesTrained as a developmental and cognitive psychologist. He is interested in factors that promote well-being, particularly for adolescent and young adult menOne major focus is on understanding and enhancing cognitive skills that are of a great value in today’s society but are often not a focus of school-based education. For example, Prof. Uttal has worked with the Chicago public schools to implement and extend the role of spatial skills in career and technical educationHis work has been recognized through receipt of the George Miller Award in 2014 for the best paper in general psychology, and the Translation Award from the International, Mind, Brain, and Society Education in 2022. Uttal served as Present of the Cognitive Development Society in 2016 and 2017.
